After announcing its upcoming “Stories” feature, WhatsApp has unveiled another exciting update for its users.
With 1.2 billion active users today, WhatsApp is introducing status updates that disappear after 24 hours, continuing to innovate and differentiate itself. Since its launch in 2009, WhatsApp had not significantly updated its status feature until now.
Previously, users could only add text and emojis to their status updates. With the new update, they can now share photos, GIFs, or videos as status updates that disappear automatically after 24 hours. This enhancement is expected to make status updates more dynamic and engaging.
The new feature also allows users to view their friends’ status updates within their contact list. Just as WhatsApp introduced end-to-end encryption for messages, the same security measures will apply to the new status updates.
Following the introduction of Snapchat’s “Stories” feature, Facebook has implemented similar functionalities on Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook itself. Recently, Facebook announced that this feature would also come to WhatsApp. Like the “Stories” feature, users will be able to browse status updates and choose who can view their posts. With this update, WhatsApp, long known as a messaging app, takes its first steps toward becoming a social network.
Although there is no confirmed release date for iOS and Android devices, the update is expected to roll out very soon.
