This feature, developed by Facebook, allows your profile to remain on social media as a memorial page after your death. The person you appoint as your legacy contact will have limited management rights over your memorialized account. Here’s what they can do:
What your Legacy Contact can do:
- Post a pinned message on your profile (e.g., a final message on your behalf or information about funeral arrangements).
- Respond to new friend requests (e.g., from old friends or relatives who were not previously on Facebook).
- Update your profile picture and cover photo.
- Download a copy of the posts and photos you shared on Facebook.
What your Legacy Contact cannot do:
- Log in to your account.
- Delete or edit posts, photos, or anything shared on your timeline.
- Read messages you’ve sent to others.
- Remove friends from your friend list.
How to Assign a Legacy Contact
To assign someone as your legacy contact:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Memorialization Settings.
- Choose Legacy Contact and assign the desired person.
If you prefer not to have your profile memorialized after your death, you also have the option to request that your account be permanently deleted.
This new feature ensures that your digital presence is handled respectfully and according to your wishes after your passing.
