What is 4.5G?
In communication technology, 4G refers to the fourth-generation wireless technology, which builds upon its predecessors, 2G and 3G, while continuing to use cellular network systems. With over 150 countries already adopting 4.5G, this technology is expected to bring significant changes in data download speeds for smart devices.
How Will 4.5G Make Life Easier?
Following 3G, the technology introduced in Turkey is referred to as 4.5G due to its more advanced version being implemented. The 4.5G technology aims to address certain issues, such as coverage area limitations.
For instance:
- With a 3G device, users can download music in approximately 10 seconds. With 4.5G, this drops to just 1 second.
- Downloading a game takes around 3 minutes on 3G, but with 4.5G, it will take only 25 seconds.
- Similarly, the waiting time for streaming HD videos will decrease from 1.5 minutes to 30 seconds.
With 4.5G, video and music streaming services will function more smoothly, and apps like Skype and FaceTime will offer higher video quality without lagging. Large file downloads will become noticeably faster with 4.5G.
Devices like the HTC One M9, Samsung Galaxy S6, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and iPad Air 2 are among those that support 4G and, consequently, 4.5G.
4.5G Launches on April 1, 2016
The official date for the 4.5G rollout in Turkey is April 1, 2016. Unless there are unexpected delays, this fourth-generation mobile communication technology will go live as planned. Operators providing 4.5G service are required to cover 95% of Turkey’s population by 2024.
Cenk Tarhan, Chief Editor of CHIP Online, mentioned in an interview with Hürriyet that 4.5G could potentially lead to lower internet prices. He explained:
“With 4.5G, users will consume data more quickly due to faster connections. Consequently, operators might offer larger data packages—like increasing a 4GB package to 6GB under the same tariff—thereby reducing unit costs for users.”
A Step Forward in Digital Connectivity
The introduction of 4.5G will advance our digital experiences further. The internet satisfaction brought by 3G will only improve with 4.5G. Whether sharing photos, watching videos, sending WhatsApp messages, or making video calls, users will encounter fewer disruptions and enjoy smoother, and often higher-quality, experiences.
Although 4.5G has yet to roll out, curiosity about 5G is already mounting. However, 5G is not expected to be available anytime soon. Initial testing is anticipated to begin in 2018, with global adoption becoming widespread by 2020.
