Swatch is preparing to introduce its new watches under the theme of “simplicity.” While the brand has not previously ventured into the smartwatch market, it has set high ambitions for this segment. Swatch plans to release NFC-enabled watches supporting contactless payment services by the end of this year.
Swatch’s smartwatches are poised to compete with the likes of Apple Watch and Android Wear. Swatch CEO Nick Hayek revealed in an interview with Swiss newspaper Tages Anzeiger that the Touch Zero 2, set to launch in August next year, will be just the beginning.
According to a report by Engadget, Swatch does not view these watches as a one-off exception or a mere experiment. Hayek emphasized that the company does not aim to create “multi-functional computers on your wrist.” Similarly, they want their watches to remain independent of platforms and services offered by other companies. Instead, Swatch aims to focus on crafting simple, functional watches that do more than just tell time.
