Below is one of the iconic photographs by Life magazine photographer W. Eugene Smith, capturing the horrifying reality of World War II. Smith’s lens offered a chilling view of the war’s devastating impact, and many similar images remain widely available online.

As we move through the present day, the world continues to inflate its ego. On one side, there’s Lady Gaga, and on the other, people saying, “Mom, I survived another day.” Yet, living was once simply about opening one’s eyes to the world—about existence itself being the most important thing. The right to live is above all else.
A World Obsessed with Division
As human inventions and living standards soar, the persistence of war, oppression, and divisive labels like us vs. them remain baffling.
Can’t humanity just take a break?
Turkey, bridging East and West, has long been admired by some and envied by others for its rich multicultural identity. However, this mosaic of cultures often brings chaos alongside its beauty.
We don’t choose where, in which culture, religion, or family we are born. If we had grown up in a different family or culture, perhaps we’d be rejecting the very ideas we currently defend. Humanity, in many ways, deceives itself. The divide between urban vs. rural, secular vs. religious, or any other labels feels more prominent than ever. And instead of focusing on meaningful self-improvement, many of us spend time worrying about where our society is heading.
What’s the root of this conflict? Don’t we all want a freer and more prosperous future?
The Value of Life
Do we not understand how precious living is? How valuable it is to ensure others live? For how long will we witness mothers weeping over flags draped over caskets? Why can’t we collectively refuse to fight wars without understanding what we’re truly fighting for?
Does a dead person need the latest Adidas sneakers or Levi’s jeans? Does Gucci eyewear look good on a lifeless body? Can you put a Prima diaper on a deceased baby? Or feed it Bebelac formula to “protect against everything”?
I hope no one reads this and responds with accusations of taking sides—“Look at what they’re doing to us!” or “This is their fault!” Beyond the value of living and ensuring others live, every other argument is nothing but one side oppressing the other.
