Facebook, the largest player in the social media market, continued its impressive growth from the first quarter of 2016 into the second quarter. In the last three months, Facebook reported revenues of $6.44 billion, earning a profit of $2.05 billion—a 59% increase compared to the same period in 2015.
1.7 Billion Monthly Users
With its rapid rise among social media platforms, Facebook’s performance continues to improve steadily. Recent data shows that Facebook now has 1.7 billion monthly active users, surpassing its competitors. Of these, 1.57 billion users access Facebook via mobile devices, and the number of daily mobile users has exceeded 1 billion, reaching 1.03 billion. Facebook’s revenue from mobile advertisements increased by 84% compared to 2015. The platform’s success is significantly attributed to its focused efforts in developing countries.
According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the platform’s rapid growth can be attributed to initiatives like the Facebook Lite Android app, designed for developing regions, as well as efforts to expand internet access in these areas. Zuckerberg also highlighted projects such as solar-powered drones aimed at expanding global internet coverage.

In addition to Facebook itself, the company’s other social media platforms have also experienced significant user growth in the last quarter. Facebook Messenger has surpassed 1 billion users, WhatsApp has crossed the 1 billion threshold, and Instagram now boasts over 500 million monthly active users.
