Apple’s WWDC 2015 event kicked off recently in San Francisco, and as expected, the company started with announcements about its operating systems. Following the introduction of OS X El Capitan, Apple unveiled iOS 9, packed with highly anticipated updates and improvements.
Smarter Siri and Enhanced Spotlight
With iOS 9, long-awaited Siri enhancements and an overhauled Spotlight feature are introduced. Performance improvements and major advancements for iPad users also stand out. Spotlight search is redefined and integrated into Siri, effectively making it a thing of the past. Accessing the search screen is now as simple as swiping right on the home screen. Spotlight is smarter, allowing users to perform searches via voice commands through Siri, effectively competing with Google Now.
Apple Maps Enhancements
iOS 9 brings significant updates to Apple Maps. Transit directions, a long-awaited feature, are finally here, offering guidance for public transportation in select cities. Nearby locations, categorized search options, and Apple Pay-supporting stores are highlighted. Additionally, the Newsstand feature is updated, now allowing users in select countries to customize their news categories. The revamped interface prioritizes visuals and resembles Flipboard.
Major iPad Updates: Multitasking and More
iPad users are in for a significant upgrade with iOS 9, as the larger-screen device gains multitasking capabilities. The Split View feature enables two apps to run side by side, but this is limited to the iPad Air 2 with its 2GB RAM. Older devices like the first-generation iPad Air and iPad Mini cannot use this feature. Slide Over allows users to temporarily overlay one app over another. The iPad keyboard is also updated with quick shortcuts on the left and right sides. Additionally, a two-finger gesture transforms the keyboard into a trackpad, making text selection easier.
Easier Migration for Android Users
The new Move to iOS app simplifies the transition for Android users by facilitating easy data transfers.
Availability
iOS 9 Beta is currently available for Apple Developers to download and test. These updates highlight Apple’s commitment to improving functionality, user experience, and seamless integration across its devices.
